Earth-Suits 1

Another little tidbit about me – I am a worrier by nature. I really wish I wasn’t and I have plenty a Bible verses memorized to repeat when my mind starts running away… but, try as I might, it still happens sometimes. I love(/hate) the Pinterest quote that says, “I’ve got 99 problems and 86 of them are completely made up scenarios in my head that I’m stressing about for absolutely no logical reason.”problems worry

I tend to be a bit overdramatic at the slightest sicknesses and pains.

Do you feel this bump on my knee?…

They’re going to have to amputate my leg…

We’ll have to move because this house isn’t handicap-accessible…

Maybe I could work at the welcome center at the Y…

But they’d have to lower the desk because I wouldn’t be able to see over it from my wheelchair…

Yep – true story of how quickly my thoughts unravel. {blush}

It was nothing short of divine intervention that my husband would become a doctor so that he could logically talk me down from the crazy.

Another divine placement in our lives is Kevin Frack, the man who holds the official title of pastor at our church. Several times in his pragmatic messages, he has referred to our bodies as our Earth-suits. Something about that word just makes me giggle a little. But it also reminds me of the big picture – and how true his words (and those of the Bible) are.

Ephesians 3:20-21 says,

“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.”

Our days here are short – so short. And these bodies? Not taking them with us when we leave. Someday, we will be finished with these lowly bodies, these temporary Earth-suits — and that is good news! But while we’re inhabiting them, we should be taking care of them.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 tells us that our bodies are temples where the Holy Spirit (GOD!) lives.
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body,”

He is INSIDE our bodies! We would never imagine coming into a church building and trashing the place because it is a “house of God.” Why are we not just as careful with our own bodies where the Holy Spirit lives? Many a church have signs restricting food and coffee in the sanctuary. Perhaps post-it notes on our foreheads reminding us not to eat junk food would be just as practical!

Eat Right Exercise Die Anyway

Yes, another Pinterest gem today: Eat Right. Exercise. Die Anyway. Well – yes, and yes, and yes. The point of eating right and exercising isn’t to live forever. That’s impossible (but you can have some really fascinating conversations with fifth graders regarding the possibility if you read one of my favorite books, Tuck Everlasting.) Take a moment to consider WHY you are exercising or trying to eat nutritiously. If you can find a deeper reason within, you may be surprised by your own newly found motivation.

I know it’s human nature (some more than others) to be concerned about the day we lay these Earth-suits to rest. Let’s all (speaking especially to myself!) keep the big picture in mind and focus on taking care of our bodies as best as we can until that day comes.

Feel free to share any practical tips for making that happen!
