Did you experiment with milkshake recipes during your growing-up years? I somehow feel like it’s an American kid sort of thing to do. A rite of passage, if you will. I certainly remember many attempts at flavor combinations. And you had to eat the results, regardless. Trust me, don’t go with the orange juice! Well, live and learn. Nothing can go wrong with vanilla and peanut butter. They were made for each other! There are so many possibilities for little additions to customize this treat, too.

You’re going to love how easy this is. And the creamy goodness. And the customizations. And the childhood memories it will bring back. And the many ways you can present this. It can be fancy, and fun! Serve it in a pretty glass. What? You don’t have a pretty glass or two for milkshakes? Better get on that. Serve it in acrylic for young children.

Of course, you can top it with whipped cream and a cherry, but you can also go all out. Try dollops of jelly dotted around the top, THEN the whipped cream on top of that. A sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg or cardamom wouldn’t go amiss. You could drizzle warm chocolate or caramel so it runs down the inside of the glass, then drizzle it on top of the whipped cream, too. Drizzle it around the rim of the glass and add crushed
whatever suits your fancy. Pretzels. Your favorite candy bar. Toffee. Graham crackers. Coconut. Peppermint.

If you want some indulgence without the indulgence, then try this Peanut Butter Keto Low Carb Smoothie with Almond Milk instead.

Are Peanut Butter Milkshakes Healthy?

Hmm. There are ways to make this healthier, if that’s your intention. You could use vegan ice cream, or even homemade ice cream or frozen yogurt. I like the idea of 90/10 or 80/20 of healthy vs fun foods. The idea being that most of the time, 80 or 90% of the time, you eat what’s considered a healthy diet for you. The other 10-20% of the time you allow yourself an indulgence. Life is good, and meant to be celebrated. Some days just call for a rich peanut butter milkshake.

Some Customizations…

First of all, chocolate. Vanilla and peanut butter called, and are asking chocolate to a play date. We could go with chunks of chocolate, chocolate chips, cacao nibs, cacao powder, chocolate syrup, or even substitute in half of the ice cream with mocha or chocolate ice cream. Or all of the above. Seriously! Just don’t expect the nutritional content to be the same. Cacao is an antioxidant, though, as is dark chocolate. Those can both be considered healthy foods.

Banana is always a welcome addition, in my book. The flavor will go well without overpowering, and it seriously adds to the creaminess. You can add a splash of real vanilla, or a teaspoon of espresso powder. You could substitute in coffee ice cream for part of the ice cream, too.

FAQs & Tips

How to Make Ahead and Store?

These are best made and served immediately. However, you can blend up the main ingredients, then put the blender into the freezer or fridge for a few minutes or up to an hour, depending on how long before you’ll serve it. Blend again briefly before pouring into serving cups.

Is it Possible to Turn this into a Boozy Shake?

It is. Replace a bit of the milk with a shot of brandy, bourbon, vodka, KahlĂșa, or an Irish creme before blending.

Is it possible to make a vegan milkshake?

For those going non-dairy, use non-dairy milk, and freeze it into ice cubes. Add chopped and frozen banana bits to help make it creamy, then add the (dairy-free) usual toppings.

Serving Suggestions

So, what goes better with a milkshake than a burger?! Try this Black Bean Power Burger with Avocado Crema or a Hawaiian Pizza Burger. Of course, you’ll need a side of fries with that, so go for McDonald’s French Fries. The recipe, not the drive-thru! Or if you’re more partial to a sandwich, try this Chicken Pesto Sandwich. You might just want ‘a little something’ to go with your shake. My younger sister loved giant pickles with hers. And our parents would let her. For lunch. Anyhow! Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it, I guess. Try Air Fryer Fried Pickles for an indulgent snack.
