Holiday classic year-round? Who says it has to be Christmas to enjoy an Eggnog Shake?
Table of Contents
Deliciously festive, eggnog is typically made during the winter holiday season, and over time became associated with Christmas. It is a rumored descendant of a medieval drink called posset, a milk and ale concoction that people would add egg into to enhance the creaminess and flavor of the drink. With just a little effort, this Eggnog Shake is surprisingly easy to make, and whips up in a matter of minutes. I just love the holiday flavors like cinnamon and nutmeg that mix into this shake, reminding me of one of my favorite time of the year.
Is Eggnog Shake Healthy?
This recipe is not a particularly healthy dessert, however, if you opt for a vegan vanilla ice cream, maybe one with an almond or oat milk base, and swap out your heavy whipped cream for a dairy-free one, you’ll be in good shape. Keep the spices, though. They make this shake and have added health benefits. Cinnamon, in addition to being high in antioxidants, also has anti-inflammatory properties. Nutmeg, another beloved spice of mine, has a distinctive pungent fragrance and a warm, slightly sweet taste. But I will warn you, a little goes a long way. When used in small amounts, nutmeg adds depth and richness, along with additional antioxidants.
Down to the nitty-gritty. What brands of ice cream to use?
The most important ingredient in this shake is the ice cream. While the recipe calls for vanilla ice cream… that still leaves you with an abundance of options to choose from. Hands down, a personal bestseller for my home is Straus Family Creamery. It’s organic and crafted with simple and pure ingredients that are minimally processed. If you have never tried their ice cream, I bet you have seen their milk products at your local grocery store. A few other brands I really enjoy are Van Leeuwen (they have great vegan flavors), Ben & Jerry’s and last but certainly not least Jeni’s. All of these brands for the most part are free of preservatives, fillers, artificial ingredients and coloring agents. You can truly taste the difference.

Usually, I would beg to differ, but in this case, store-bought eggnog is perfectly fine. I say this because it keeps the shake as easy as can be without compromising the flavor. Just make sure to find an eggnog that is made with clean ingredients and isn’t loaded with a bunch of additives or preservatives.
To enhance your shake, consider slightly softening your ice cream. You don’t want it to be melted but at the same time, we don’t want it to be super hard. Another tip is to chill your drinking glasses before serving, it will help keep the dessert cooler for longer.
