I think we can all agree that this summer. is. HOT. Down here in Virginia where I live, people have been desperately trying to escape the intense heat and the suffocating humidity. We probably resemble zombies, walking around town overheated. However, instead of brains, we’re all just craving the perfect drink or dish to cool us down. I have been on the hunt for the next big thing that will provide the refreshing relief I desire, and guys, I think I may have found a contender. You may be wondering, “Is it just another lemonade recipe?” And no, my dear readers, it is just that much better. Feast your eyes on the title of this article in wonder as I introduce: the sweet, yet tangy, refreshing, and a little spicy…mango avocado salsa!

A salsa? Yes a salsa! Too often we look to drinks to provide that refreshing flavor we love in the summer heat. But a classic, cooling dip should not be overlooked. This mango avocado salsa recipe is perfect for summer grilling and barbecues, as it’s easy to prepare, absolutely divine in flavor, and pairs well with so many other foods. I’m talking chicken, seafood, pork, and even delicious meals like tacos, tostadas, and coconut rice. Sweet meets savory meets tangy meets fresh: if you’re looking for a dish that will hit your taste buds in all the right spots, then look no further this summer than mango avocado salsa.

Is Mango Avocado Salsa Healthy?

Why yes, mango avocado salsa is very nutritious! One of our stars of the show, the mango, really packs a punch by being an excellent source of vitamins A, C, K, potassium, magnesium… I can go on! Mango’s teammate, the avocado, brings in all the vitamins, healthy fats and fiber your body will love. Red onion, fresh cilantro, jalapeño and lime juice contribute as well to making this a nutrient-dense dish. Oh, and did I mention that it is gluten-free, paleo, vegan and vegetarian? So for any of our friends trying and failing to find a refreshing dish that meets many dietary preferences and restrictions, you can take a big breath and enjoy this salsa.

How can I pick the perfect mango?

Finding a ripe and delicious mango can sometimes feel like pure luck. Maybe the Olympics should consider adding a “Finding Ripe Fruit” category to its sport lineup. But in all seriousness, it can be frustrating to pick a mango lacking in flavor especially when it’s meant to be a main part of a recipe like this one. Thankfully, you can up your chances of snagging a perfect mango at the grocery store with just a few tips. First off, mango season typically runs from May to September, so if you’d like to make this dish for any summer activities then you are in luck. Now once you’re at the store and looking at the mango selection, I’d like you to smell and feel the mangoes. A ripe mango should have a sweet, fruity aroma near the end of the stem. If you don’t smell anything, move on to another mango. When feeling a mango, give it a gentle squeeze; a ripe mango will give slightly to pressure, whereas an unripe mango will be too firm. If it feels mushy, then it’s overripe, which is something you will also want to avoid.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 large ripe mango, peeled and diced
  • 1 large ripe avocado, peeled and diced
  • 1/2 cup red onion, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 jalapeño, seeded and minced
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • Salt to taste

FAQs & Tips

How to Make Ahead and Store

If you’d like to make your mango avocado salsa ahead of time, simply mix all the ingredients together and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2-3 days. If you choose to cut up your avocado and then store in the fridge, placing plastic wrap on top of the salsa before putting the airtight lid on top can help stop the avocado from turning brown. However, I recommend leaving the avocado out and cutting it up right before you plan to serve. If freezing, you can place a piece of parchment paper over the salsa and store in a freezer-safe container for up to 2-3 months.

use fresh ingredients!

You don’t want to take a bite of the mango avocado salsa you have been looking forward to all day and realize the ingredients are not fresh – what a buzzkill! This is why I highly recommend buying your ingredients and making your salsa as close to the time you plan to enjoy it as possible.

Take control of the spice level…

This recipe includes a nice, spicy kick with the inclusion of 1 jalapeño pepper. However, if you’re sensitive to spice, you can either opt to remove the jalapeño or simply avoid including the seeds in your salsa. For my spice lovers, feel free to add an additional jalapeño or 2 if the mood strikes you!

Serving Suggestions

Mango avocado salsa is so delicious and goes with so many things. You don’t just have to serve this decadent salsa with tortilla chips… go big! Why not try pairing it with Seared Tuna Tacos? Yum! Or maybe get inspired by the concept of al pastor by pairing mango avocado salsa with these Green Curry Pork Tacos with Pineapple! You could even substitute the pineapple for mango avocado salsa. But hey, I don’t mean to be rude to tortilla chips: they are classic. How about making your own from scratch and including other fun dips to go along with the salsa like a nice, creamy guacamole?
