Cool yourself down with Frozen Yogurt—a healthy yet delicious ice cream alternative!
Table of Contents
Gosh, I love ice cream. It goes down so easily and cools me off on hot summer afternoons. But who am I kidding? I’d eat ice cream even if it was 20 degrees below zero. One of the ways I like to curb my almost-addiction to ice cream is with frozen yogurt. I’m not talking about that overly sugared junk from one of the many fro-yo chains that have seemingly sprouted overnight. This frozen yogurt recipe ditches those sickly sweet swirls filled with who knows what for a simple and healthy treat you can make at home.
This frozen yogurt has a tangy and naturally sweet flavor, thanks to the four cups of frozen strawberries. It’s slightly tart as well, though the honey, yogurt, and banana help balance it out. Not a fan of strawberries? We’ve got a couple of other frozen yogurt recipes you should check out, as well as some delicious dairy alternatives.
Is Frozen Yogurt Healthy?
The only added sweetness you’re gonna find in this yogurt recipe is the honey, so I’d say it’s as healthy as a dessert can get. I’d go one step further and say this frozen yogurt is quite nourishing. Greek yogurt is rich in protein, probiotics, and calcium. As far as strawberries go, they’ve been known to reduce inflammation, aid digestion, boost your immune system, and so much more. Oh, and bananas—there are two cups’ worth in this yogurt, and these guys are loaded with a bunch of good stuff, too, like fiber, potassium, vitamin B6, and phytonutrients. Feel free to swap the strawberries with another berry; for dairy-free individuals, a vegan yogurt could also work.
Honey: More than a sweetener
Honey is such a versatile ingredient, and I’m always blown away by what this gold liquid can do. For example, do you know that honey acts as a natural preservative and stabilizer? Its ability to attract and retain water helps manage ice crystal formation during the freezing process of your frozen yogurt. The result is a much smoother and creamier texture.
Of course, honey also brings mellow sweetness to the frozen yogurt and helps tame the tartness of the strawberries (or whatever fruit you choose). What’s more, the type of honey you use can change how your frozen yogurt tastes. Like, if you use clover honey, it’ll taste more light and floral, while darker honey tastes more rich. Personally, I like the lighter taste of the clover honey, but you do you!

FAQs & Tips
Store it in the freezer, of course! Just be sure to use a freezer-safe container. It should last you several weeks.
If you can’t find non-fat Greek yogurt or you want a creamier taste, whole milk or low-fat Greek yogurt is great. Whether it tastes better is really up to you! I personally like non-fat because it’s lighter both in calories and taste.
Greek yogurt is creamier. Its straining process removes a lot of the whey and lactose while leaving behind all the protein. Regular yogurt, meanwhile, is much lighter and liquid, with more carbs.
Serving Suggestions
I’m a sucker for cones, especially waffle cones. Also, a dollop of low-fat or dairy-free whipped cream is wonderful; however, I think the best pairing for frozen yogurt is pie, like banana cream. Cake is never a bad idea, either. This fruity frozen yogurt complements our blueberry paleo cake and also makes a delicious side to these gluten-free cheesecake bars.
