  • Asian Rice

There are so many great meals out there that can be made even better by adding a side of rice. For times like that, we don’t ever want you to think that you have to settle for a boring dish of rice. Especially when authentic Asian rice can be made quickly and with just a few ingredients that you probably have around the house already.

A little soy sauce, sesame oil, and green onions are all that separate you from traditional white rice and bonafide Asian rice. It really doesn’t take much to turn regular rice into a savory and flavorful side. So, if you’re making a main course that can benefit from a side of Asian rice, don’t hesitate to pull out this recipe.

Plus, once you’re done, we’ve got plenty more ways to spice up an otherwise boring bowl of rice. For starters, you can make this Cilantro Lime Instant Pot Rice that imitates Chipotle’s recipe. You can also explore our recipes for Spanish Rice and Mexican Rice, or even Cauliflower Fried Rice or Cauliflower Rice Stir-Fry.

Is Asian Rice Healthy?

For most diets, there is nothing wrong with having Asian rice as a side dish. The jasmine rice used is a good source of carbohydrates. As long as you use low-sodium soy sauce and low-sodium sesame oil, you should be able to curb the amount of sodium in Asian rice, which is one of the few pitfalls from a health perspective. Plus, in addition to green onions, you’re free to add other vegetables to the rice if you like, potentially further improving the nutritional profile of the dish.

The Right Rice…

This recipe for Asian rice calls for jasmine rice, although it’s possible to consider other options. Some cooks recommend finding short-grain rice from a Japanese or Korean market as an alternative to jasmine rice. If you want to get the most out of this rice, it’s best to use fresh rice. If you end up using jasmine rice, remember to rinse or soak the rice before you start to cook it. Finally, adding an extra vegetable or two after the rice has been cooked isn’t a bad idea. For instance, many people find that peas are a good addition to Asian rice.

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/2 cups jasmine rice
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 2 green onions, thinly sliced

With any leftovers of your Asian rice, keep them in the fridge inside an airtight container. They should remain good for about 3 days and can be easily heated up in the microwave.
