If you love Italian food, veal parmesan is probably on your list of favorites. Personally, I spent years only ordering veal parm in restaurants because I assumed that such a great dish required a professional chef. But when I found this recipe, I discovered that’s not the case at all. It’s actually rather simple. With quality ingredients, anybody can make veal parmesan that tastes just as good as your local Italian restaurant.
Quality veal will always come out tender and juicy if you cook it the right way. Veal tastes even better when covered with breadcrumbs and surrounded by marinara sauce and gooey cheese. Just thinking about it makes me want to cook it for dinner tonight. Luckily, that’s always an option with such a simple recipe.
If you like Italian but aren’t a veal fan, there are other options you can try. Air fryer chicken parmesan is an option worth considering. Italian meatloaf has become one of my recent favorites, as well as paleo Italian meatballs in the instant pot. For lovers of Italian food, I’d also recommend trying instant pot pasta primavera.
Is Veal Parmesan Healthy?
There are two sides to veal parmesan from a health perspective. The dish comes with a lot of fat, calories, and sodium. That includes 9 grams of saturated fat, more than 50% of the recommended daily total. Veal parmesan may not be the best meal for anyone on a diet aiming to reduce fat and sodium. On the other hand, veal is a wonderful source of protein. In fact, this dish delivers more than the daily recommended amount of protein. This dish is also high in several nutrients, including calcium, potassium, and iron, so there are plenty of positives from a health perspective.
Some Extra Options
While veal parmesan is wonderful in part because of its simplicity, there are a few extra items you can include in the recipe. For instance, mixing basil or Italian seasoning with the marinara sauce can give the dish a little extra flavor. At times, I’ve added a layer of prosciutto on top of the cutlets before putting the marinara sauce, mozzarella, and parmesan on top. Also, I like to put a thin layer of marinara sauce on the bottom of the baking dish before placing the cutlets in there, giving the veal even more sauce.

FAQs & Tips
Veal parmesan can easily be made ahead of time. Cook the veal cutlets, allow them to cool, and refrigerate them in the baking dish until you’re ready to bake.
While not required, some people like to soak veal in milk overnight to make the meat even more tender.
Serving Suggestions
A pot of spaghetti is usually the best complement to veal parmesan. However, there are other options as well. Rather than pasta, I like to make a salad with veal, including roasted red peppers and almond salad. A vegetable side dish like instant pot green beans or cheesy baked asparagus can also work. Finally, a simple side like brown rice pilaf or mashed red potatoes can be an excellent side dish for veal parmesan.
